What the EU AI Act governs
The EU AI Act is the first comprehensive AI law worldwide. It classifies AI systems by risk and attaches graded obligations:
- Unacceptable risk: prohibited, e.g. social scoring
- High risk: documentation and assessment required, e.g. medicine or justice
- Limited risk: transparency obligations, e.g. labeling of chatbots
- Minimal risk: no specific obligations

- February 2025: ban on unacceptable practices
- August 2025: general purpose AI obligations
- August 2026: main application
- August 2027: high-risk obligations in regulated sectors
