What the EU AI Act governs

The EU AI Act is the first comprehensive AI law worldwide. It classifies AI systems by risk and attaches graded obligations:

  • Unacceptable risk: prohibited, e.g. social scoring
  • High risk: documentation and assessment required, e.g. medicine or justice
  • Limited risk: transparency obligations, e.g. labeling of chatbots
  • Minimal risk: no specific obligations

  • February 2025: ban on unacceptable practices
  • August 2025: general purpose AI obligations
  • August 2026: main application
  • August 2027: high-risk obligations in regulated sectors
